Join NCAD Faculty Member Derek Gundy for a two part drawing experience in downtown Tacoma. Get a taste of what truly makes Tacoma a great city for art!
Day One: Friday August 9th
Artists will meet in the 5th floor studio classroom at NCAD
Derek will guide you through sketching exercises in a classroom setting, with an emphasis on drawing from observation, while preparing for an experience drawing on location next week. Each artist will receive a sketchbook and a few simple tools ideal for sketching on location.
Students will be guided through drawing exercises in:
Markmaking ● Line Weight ● Sighting Angles ● Basic Shapes ● Ellipses ● Freehand Perspective
At the end of this class you will have a sense of how to approach drawings in a dynamic manner from observation, and will gain understanding of how to approach sketching on location.
Day Two: Friday August 16th
Artists will meet briefly at NCAD before venturing out to sketch ON LOCATION in downtown Tacoma. *Location to be determined based on weather conditions.
In gathering visual information for any drawing, painting, or design, visiting that location is essential. Drawing on location is one of the most valuable methods of documenting any location. We can take photos, but these only capture a fraction of a second. Drawing on location allows the artist to absorb the entire experience and translate that into visual marks on a page.
Derek will take you to a unique location where each artist will have multiple possibilities for sketching – with a special assignment.
Derek Gundy has been teaching Drawing & Painting Foundation Classes at NCAD since 2016 and is a co- founder of Sketch Seattle. Derek is a fine artist and illustrator who works in a wide variety of media, examples of his artwork can be seen at www.derekgundyart.com
