WHY ARE STUDENTS REQUIRED TO HAVE AN EXTERNSHIP?

To give them a jump-start, we require all students to complete a three-credit externship class. Students begin to research possible externship opportunities as early as sophomore year, and later put together an employer roster that prioritizes the companies they would like to pursue. Armed with this research, students continue working closely with placement staff to secure a senior-year externship that is both beneficial and meaningful to them.

Externship Parameters

  • The student will work nine hours per week (135 hours total) at an off-campus, approved business appropriate to their education concentration.
  • An on-site supervisor provided by the extern company will submit weekly evaluations of the student’s on-the-job performance to the NCAD placement representative, who records attendance.
  • The evaluation form is then given to the faculty supervisor monitoring the externship.
  • The supervisor monitors the intern’s progress and meets with them throughout the semester to advise, evaluate, and assist.
